Philosophy Of Teaching

(Written By: Ms. Mari, Spring 1992)

Children are born wanting to learn." (Purkey and Novak, 1984.). I believe that the basic goal of education is to enhance and nurture this desire in a positive manner, so that all children regardless of race, gender, creed, or socioeconomic background will carry this desire with them throughout their lifetime, and become productive members of our society. To educate is to provide positive learning experiences, and in order for learning to be positive, it must take place in a truly loving and nurturing atmosphere; one that stimulates, is attractive, pleasing, and flexible enough to invite creativity and risk-taking. It must be an atmosphere that welcomes all interests, new ideas, and beliefs; one that accepts each child's uniqueness and abilities, and at the same time, offers appropriate challenges without inhibiting the fear of trying one's best at all times. This loving and nurturing environment must be also be one in which all people and property are treated with equal dignity and respect. In order for this environment to succeed, a crucial but basic underlying belief must be present: that each and every child can achieve success.

Since nurturing the desire to learn is the basic goal of education, it is crucial to remember that learning comes in a variety of forms. Before we can impart knowledge of basic communication and critical thinking skills, I believe we have to be aware that learning is listening and watching as well as doing and feeling. Because every child learns at different rates and does best with certain styles, we have to provide for all of the learning styles of the children. Finally, because I believe education demands the enhancement of the whole child, the physical and social aspects as well as the mental processes and academic needs of the child must be focused on. This demands that curriculum be diversified and flexible, so that each child can experience success.
